Canada Drone Regulations

Drone Regulations in Canada: What You Need to Know

Canada’s drone regulations are designed to keep the skies safe while making it easy for pilots to enjoy flying. Since June 1, 2019, Transport Canada requires drone pilots to follow clear rules based on the type of drone and where it is flown.

Who Needs to Follow the Rules?

The regulations apply to anyone flying a drone that weighs between 250 g and 25 kg within visual line of sight.

Two Categories of Drone Operations

  • Basic Operations: Flying further from bystanders and outside controlled airspace. Requires online exam, drone registration, and a drone pilot certificate.
  • Advanced Operations: Flying over or near people, or in controlled airspace. Requires online exam, in-person flight review, a drone pilot certificate, and a Transport Canada–compliant drone.

Exemptions

  • Under 250 g: No exam or registration needed, but you must always fly safely and avoid putting people or other aircraft at risk.
  • Over 25 kg: Requires a Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC) from Transport Canada.

Pilot Requirements

All drone pilots (Basic and Advanced):

  • Must register and mark their drone with a Transport Canada registration number.
  • Must pass the online exam and carry their pilot certificate while flying.
  • Must always follow visual line-of-sight rules and respect airspace safety.
